Nieuwe Hezelpoort, Railway viaduct in Nijmegen, Netherlands
Nieuwe Hezelpoort is a railway viaduct in Nijmegen featuring a horseshoe-shaped arch passage with flanking abutments built from brick and stone. A separate passage for pedestrians and cyclists runs alongside on the left side.
The viaduct was built between 1876 and 1879, replacing an older city gate at the site. It became a key part of the new railway connection linking Nijmegen to the village of Hees.
The structure shows design features borrowed from medieval city gates, mixing red brick in a cross bond pattern with natural stone elements. This blend of historical forms gives the passage a distinctive character.
The viaduct is easily accessible from ground level, with pathways for pedestrians and cyclists passing underneath the structure. The area is open and offers clear views from street level.
During World War II, defensive obstacles called asparagus barriers were embedded in the road surface beneath the viaduct. This measure reveals the strategic importance of this location during the occupation.
