Smeerling

Smeerling is a cluster of eight traditional farms positioned along the Ruiten Aa stream, forming a cohesive agricultural settlement in Groningen province. The homesteads sit in a valley surrounded by woodlands that contribute to the character of this historic settlement.

The farms were established in the 18th century when agricultural expansion became necessary to supply the growing population in the region. This development shows how new settlements emerged to increase food production.

The eight farms display traditional Westerwold architecture with their distinctive features that mark this as a protected cultural landscape. Visitors can observe these building styles while walking through the settlement and understand how residents have lived here across generations.

The hamlet is crossed by walking trails that lead through the valley and adjoining forests, offering various routes for different ability levels. The Gasterij Natuurlijk Smeerling restaurant in a restored farmhouse serves as a practical meeting point and offers local dishes.

The location sits in the Ruiten Aa valley, surrounded by Metbroekbos forest and Liefstinghsbroek, which preserve remnants of the original Westerwolde woodland. These rare forest areas make a visit especially rewarding for nature lovers, as they offer a glimpse into the region's original landscape structure.
