Heerderstrand

Heerderstrand is a recreation and beach area at the edge of the Veluwe region, featuring a lake surrounded by pine forests. The site provides parking facilities, a beach pavilion for food and drinks, and the opportunity to rent stand-up paddleboards.

The site originated from sand extraction activities during construction of the A50 motorway, which created the present-day lake. This former extraction landscape was later transformed into a popular recreational destination.

The sculpture group 'De Ontmoeting' by Frans Goldhagen displays figures walking toward the water in organized rows, creating a thoughtful focal point along the shoreline. These bronze forms invite visitors to reflect on movement and connection as they walk along the beach.

The beach is easily accessible from the parking area, with well-marked paths suitable for various fitness levels. The pavilion restaurant operates seasonally and provides a convenient rest stop for extended visits.

The water body resulted from an unintended byproduct of motorway construction, leaving behind a gravel pit. This unexpected industrial legacy was skillfully transformed into a popular leisure destination, demonstrating how former extraction sites can gain new purpose.
