Grote of Sint-Martinuskerk

The Grote of Sint-Martinuskerk is a Gothic church with two aisles and a five-sided choir, its stonework displaying crafted details throughout. The building features massive walls and ornate window openings that reflect classic northern European church construction methods.

The church began construction between 1425 and 1450 with the choir section and was later expanded between 1588 and 1593. A major renovation in 1856 improved its structure and condition.

The name honors Saint Martin, patron of travelers and the poor, reflecting its importance to the local community. Inside, personal memorial stones throughout the building serve as reminders of significant people from the town.

The church sits centrally at Markt 2 in Dokkum and is easily reached on foot. Visitors should plan for regular opening hours and treat the building respectfully, as it remains an active place of worship.

The organ case with gallery dates from 1668 and showcases the craft of an earlier period. The pulpit from 1751 completes the array of artfully designed elements spanning different eras of Dutch church furnishings.
