Sint-Bonifatiuskerk, Dokkum, Catholic pilgrimage church in Dokkum, Netherlands
Sint-Bonifatiuskerk is a pilgrimage church in Dokkum featuring a three-aisled basilica structure with stone ribbed vaults beneath the choir and wooden barrel vaults spanning the nave. The building displays carefully crafted interior spaces with both decorative and functional elements serving its religious community.
The church was designed by architect Pierre Cuypers in 1871, though a tower collapsed during construction in 1874. The building was then completely rebuilt and finished in 1878.
The church houses a reliquary containing part of Saint Boniface's skull, brought from the crypt of Fulda Cathedral. This sacred relic draws pilgrims from across the region who visit to show their devotion.
The chapel can be visited from June through September, while guided tours are available year-round to learn about the site's religious importance. It is best to check opening times in advance to plan your visit properly.
The stained glass windows were created by different artists including H. de Vos who made detailed windows in 1904 and Max Weiss whose work was completed in 1946. The interior organ was built by L. van Dam in 1883 and adds to the artistic heritage of the building.
