Sint Jan de Doper, Arnhem, church building in Arnhem, Netherlands
Sint Jan de Doper in Arnhem is a brick church in neogothic style built around 1895 with three connected interior spaces that create an open hall layout. The building features pointed arched windows with tracery, a prominent tower with a spire, wooden and stone altars decorated with sculptures, and stained glass windows depicting scenes from the life of Saint John the Baptist.
The church was designed and built between 1894 and 1895 by architect Alfred Tepe to serve the growing Catholic community in Arnhem's Klarendal neighborhood. During World War II, many of the original stained glass windows were destroyed but were later restored or replaced.
The church is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, a biblical figure whose name defines the building's identity and spiritual purpose. This dedication shaped how the local Catholic community gathered here for generations, making it a meaningful landmark in neighborhood life.
The building is no longer an active church but functions as a protected monument with a new purpose. Access may be limited, so visitors should check local information before planning a visit.
The altars and statues inside were created by artists from the St. Bernulphus artist group, showing the specialized craftsmanship that defined church decoration in the late 1800s. The sculptures rest on detailed marble bases and demonstrate the skill invested in every detail.
