Fort de Hel, Military fortification in Willemstad, Netherlands
Fort de Hel is a fortification with a square layout and French military design, positioned near the Hollandsch Diep and Volkerak waterways in North Brabant. The structure was later expanded and equipped with various cannons and defensive weapons.
The fort was built in 1811 by French forces as Fort l'Enfer, serving as part of the defensive system during the Napoleonic Wars. A major renovation in 1884 significantly increased its capacity and strengthened its military function.
The fort now hosts theatrical performances and poetry events, transforming from a military structure into a space for creative expression. Visitors experience artistic gatherings that bring cultural life to this historic site.
The site is accessible to visitors from June through September, with extended hours during July and August. Checking ahead for current visiting times and events is recommended before your visit.
The fort held substantial quantities of gunpowder and an impressive arsenal of weapons, including multiple cannon types for defense. This weaponry reflects the strategic importance of the location during its military service.
