Volkerak locks, Navigation lock in Willemstad, Netherlands.
The Volkerak locks connect several waterways and regulate water levels between the Volkerak waterway and the surrounding network in North Brabant. The facility has three parallel chambers of different sizes, allowing various vessel types to pass simultaneously.
The locks were built as a key part of the Delta Works project, which in 1987 transformed the Volkerak from a tidal river into a freshwater lake. This transformation combined water protection with improved conditions for vessels and people in the area.
The locks form a working landmark that locals pass regularly, serving as a visible reminder of human control over water systems. For maritime workers and recreational boaters, they represent an essential part of daily movement through the region.
Visitors can watch the locks from several viewpoints that are accessible around the facility. The best views of passing vessels come from the waterfront areas, particularly when ships transit through the chambers.
The three parallel chambers enable a rare capability: different ship types can pass through the locks simultaneously while managing different water levels between channels. This was an innovative solution to improve flow while protecting water quality.
