Sabina Henrica Fort, Military fort in Helwijk, Netherlands
Sabina Henrica Fort is a historic military fort in Helwijk, in the municipality of Moerdijk, built with thick stone walls, deep moats, and underground chambers. It is classified as a Rijksmonument and architectural ensemble, making it one of the most protected fortifications in the region.
Napoleon ordered the fort built in 1811 as part of a defensive system meant to control the region's waterways against British naval forces. Over the following decades, the structure was adapted and modified to meet changing military needs.
Inside the main barracks arches, a brewery restaurant serves regional Dutch food surrounded by old brick walls and military stonework. This unusual combination draws visitors who want something beyond a standard museum experience.
The fort is mainly open on weekends, and visitors should wear sturdy shoes since the underground pathways can be uneven. Guided tours are available and make it easier to navigate the different parts of the site.
The fort's walls shelter a protected bat colony that visitors can sometimes spot during a visit. The grounds around the fort have been designated as a bird sanctuary, which draws birdwatchers throughout the year.
