Calslagen, Hamlet in Aalsmeer, Netherlands
Calslagen is a hamlet in the Amsterdam area, situated along the Westeinderplassen water area south of Hoofddorp. About 35 houses and 10 houseboats form the settlement, with residences built directly along the waterway.
Until 1854, this hamlet was a separate municipality called Kalslagen en Bilderdam before it merged into larger administrative regions. This change redefined how the settlement was governed and organized.
A cemetery marks where a medieval church once stood before burning down in 1803, with gravestones laid out on the former church floor. These old graves show how this place held spiritual meaning for generations of residents.
The area is best reached by car or bicycle from Amsterdam or Hoofddorp, following signs toward Westeinderplassen. Being a rural location, having your own transportation helps you explore the hamlet and the waterside more freely.
Two notable Dutch performers, Wim Kan and Corry Vonk, chose to make their home in this hamlet during the twentieth century. Their presence connected this small settlement to the broader Dutch arts and entertainment world.
