Villa Gelria, Protected historical villa in Helpman district, Groningen, Netherlands
Villa Gelria features a Mediterranean architectural design with dark brown, ochre, and gray-blue exterior colors on the Verlengde Hereweg street.
Built in 1873 for industrialist Jan Evert Scholten, the villa later served as SS headquarters during World War II and police offices until 1974.
The name Gelria, Latin for Gelderland, honors the province where the original owner's father originated, connecting the building to Dutch regional identity.
The two-story villa includes a coach house and gardener's residence, operating currently as office spaces available for commercial rental.
Recent restoration work in 2022 returned the villa to its original color scheme, making it stand out among other provincial mansions.
