Hofboerderij, Religious monastery in Wateringen, Netherlands
Hofboerderij is a central building in Hofpark that displays traditional Dutch agricultural architecture with preserved medieval elements. The structure features stone foundations and forms the core of this historical property.
The complex was established in 1485 as a Cistercian monastery through a donation by Hendrik IV van Naaldwijk. It was destroyed in 1573 during the Eighty Years' War, but was later rebuilt.
The building now serves as a center for art exhibitions and theatrical performances, where local artists regularly display their work. Visitors can experience these cultural events throughout the year, which give the place its contemporary identity.
The grounds are open to visitors on Saturdays and Sundays from 13:30 to 16:30, except during August. Dedicated parking spaces and charging stations for electric bicycles are available on site.
The property holds the historical right to keep swans in its moat, a privilege granted to Jacob Huygensz van der Dussen in 1589. This rare entitlement has been maintained until today and sets this place apart.
