Rijksdorp, Residential hamlet in Wassenaar, Netherlands
Rijksdorp is a residential area in Wassenaar near the dunes, featuring mostly detached homes with spacious gardens and tree-covered land. The settlement spreads across several blocks with individual properties separated by landscaping and wooded sections.
The settlement originated in the 14th century as a homestead belonging to the Wassenaar domain. It transformed significantly in the 20th century into a modern residential villa area.
The settlement was redesigned as a villa park in 1920 following architect Co Brandes's vision for upscale Dutch living. Houses sit spaced among gardens and woodlands that continue to define the character of the neighborhood today.
The area is within convenient reach of medical facilities and schools for daily needs. Direct access to the dunes and woodlands allows for outdoor activities in the immediate surroundings.
During World War II, German forces constructed a military command center with massive concrete bunkers nestled among some of the villas. Remnants of these defensive structures are still visible in parts of the area.
