Vlaardingse Vaart Bridge, Pedestrian and bicycle bridge in Vlaardingen, Netherlands.
The Vlaardingse Vaart Bridge is a footbridge and cycling crossing in Vlaardingen that spans the Vlaardingervaart canal. Its red steel structure features a twisted design that shifts from a rectangular cross-section at the ends to a diamond shape in the center.
The bridge opened in 2009 using prefabrication combined with on-site assembly techniques. The project arose from the need to connect two residential areas across the canal.
West 8 architectural firm designed this infrastructure project, which received recognition as a finalist in the Dutch Design Awards best public space category.
The bridge connects the neighborhoods of Holy-Zuid and Broekpolder and serves as an important passage for pedestrians and cyclists. Access is level and straightforward to use on foot or by bike.
The steel structure is made from over 400 welded tubes that give the material both weight and efficiency. This careful construction detail allows the twisted form without compromising durability.
