Faliezustersklooster, Medieval monastery in Jekerkwartier, Maastricht, Netherlands.
The Faliezustersklooster is a medieval monastery building in Maastricht located near the Jeker River, featuring Renaissance architecture with window frames crafted from limestone and marlstone. The structure displays characteristic stone details on its ground floor facade and marlstone on the upper levels.
The monastery dates from the medieval period and served as home to a religious community of sisters dedicated to nursing. In 1796, French authorities closed the building, ending centuries of religious use.
The sisters took their name from their distinctive veils and devoted themselves to nursing the sick and caring for mentally ill women. This work shaped daily life in the monastery across the centuries.
The building is located in the Jekerkwartier neighborhood at Faliezusterspark 1-5 and is easy to identify by its characteristic stone facade with contrasting materials. Visitors should note this is a protected monument best viewed from public areas surrounding the site.
A gravestone of a former mother superior remains embedded in the second medieval city wall, displaying her name and year of death. This quiet memorial to a deceased leader is still visible today and offers a personal glimpse into the community's history.
