Helpoort, Medieval city gate in Jekerkwartier, Maastricht, Netherlands.
The Helpoort is a medieval city gate in Maastricht featuring a rectangular gatehouse with two half-round towers built from sandstone. The structure sits at a significant point along what was once the city's fortified perimeter.
The gate was built around 1230 as part of the city's first defensive walls, making it the oldest surviving city gate in the Netherlands. Its construction followed permission granted by the Duke of Brabant to fortify the settlement.
The gate houses a museum dedicated to the city's defensive history, where you can see how medieval Maastricht protected itself. The exhibits show what life was like for people living behind these walls and why such fortifications mattered.
The gate is easy to reach on foot in the historic Jekerkwartier neighborhood with its narrow streets and old buildings. Stairs lead up to viewing areas if you want to see the structure from different angles.
What sets this gate apart is how much of its original exterior materials survive unchanged to the present day. During restoration work in the 19th century, workers also reconstructed defensive structures that had once protected the top of the gateway.
