Jekertoren, wall tower in Maastricht, Netherlands
Jekertoren is a small, round fortified tower in Maastricht that stood at the southeastern corner of the original city wall near the Maas River. The tower has thick walls of dark sandstone, stands about 15 meters high, and features a pointed roof with small openings for observation and defense.
The tower was built in the late 13th century and is over 700 years old. Around 1550, it was lowered for military needs, and in 1911, architect Willem Sprenger restored it to its current appearance with a pointed roof and slate covering.
The tower was originally connected to a gate at its base, part of the medieval city's protection system. Today, visitors can see how the city guarded its boundaries and how residents organized their living space during that era.
The tower sits in a quiet area with cobblestone streets near Stadspark and is easily reached on foot when walking through the historic district. Visitors should know the area is peaceful and the best views and photos can be taken from outside the tower.
The tower is also known as Maaspunttoren or Rondeeltoren, names referring to its location near the Maas River. These local names show how important the tower was for the city's river defense.
