Kasteel Endegeest, National heritage castle in Oegstgeest, Netherlands
Kasteel Endegeest is a castle in Oegstgeest constructed with two eight-sided corner towers topped by dome roofs and surrounded by a moat on three sides. The property sits within a forested area that connects to an adjacent park.
The current structure was built between 1647 and 1651 under the direction of Elisabeth van Schouwen van Endegeest and Jacob van Berchem. From 1895 to 2016, the property served as part of a psychiatric institution housing medical facilities and administrative offices.
The name derives from the original estate and the family who shaped this region for generations. Visitors can still see traces of this noble connection in the architecture and the surrounding parkland.
The castle is located at Endegeesterstraatweg 5 in Oegstgeest and surrounded by forest that provides a peaceful approach. The surrounding parkland allows for easy walking and exploration of the grounds.
French philosopher René Descartes stayed here for two years from 1641 to 1643, leaving behind a bust on the grounds. This period contributed to the intellectual history of the place and draws visitors interested in this notable thinker.
