Water tower De Lichtmis, Water tower in De Lichtmis, Netherlands
The water tower De Lichtmis is a cylindrical structure in Zwolle standing about 60 feet (18 m) tall with brick masonry construction and a distinctive shape that dominates the local area. The building has a wide base containing the water tank and upper levels adapted to house a restaurant with views.
Architect Hendrik Sangster designed this structure in 1932 to meet the water supply needs of an expanding Zwolle. The building served its original purpose for many decades before being repurposed for other uses.
The tower shows how Dutch engineering from the early 1900s could combine practical water supply work with thoughtful design. Visitors today experience this blend of utility and craft when they visit the site.
The tower is easy to locate on Lichtmisweg and offers wide views from the upper levels when you visit. Walking up through the building allows you to see how the space was organized and how it functions today.
The building was fully converted and now houses a restaurant where visitors can dine in the upper levels. The original water tank purpose is hidden from the outside, yet the restaurant name De Koperen Hoogte references this past function.
