Blitz, Community center in Pilestredet, Oslo, Norway.
Blitz is a self-managed center for alternative culture on Pilestredet in Oslo. The three-story building houses event spaces, band rehearsal rooms, a concert hall, and an independent feminist radio station on the top floor.
Activists opened the center in 1982 after relocating from Skippergata 6, following negotiations with Oslo municipality for use of the building. During the 1990s, the house survived two bombing attacks targeting its left-wing orientation.
The radio station broadcasts feminist programs daily, while rotating exhibitions about social movements fill the ground floor. People from across the city gather in the vegan cafe over affordable meals to discuss activism and ongoing projects.
The entrance sits on Pilestredet, a short walk from central Oslo. The house opens in the afternoon and evening for events and gatherings, with the concert hall welcoming visitors outside the regular community.
The house has been organized through general assemblies for over four decades, with all decisions made collectively and without formal hierarchy. This horizontal structure shapes daily life in every room, from the cafe to the concert hall.
