Lepsøy Bridge, Box girder road bridge in Ålesund Municipality, Norway
The Lepsøy Bridge is a road bridge made of concrete and steel in Ålesund Municipality. It spans 800 meters across Lepsøyrevet with a main opening of 155 meters that allows large vessels to navigate through the waterway.
Construction began in 2019 as part of the Nordøyvegen project, with official opening on December 18, 2021. This connection resolved decades of limited transport access between the mainland and surrounding island communities.
This bridge strengthens connections between mainland Norway and the island communities, supporting local maritime traditions and daily life patterns.
The structure provides 41 meters of clearance underneath to accommodate larger ships passing through. It carries about 1000 vehicles daily across its two lanes, making it a busy crossing for locals and travelers.
Nearby waters once held a lighthouse ship that served as a navigation aid from 1857 onwards. A permanent lighthouse was eventually built to replace this floating station.
