Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, Pelplin

The Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption is a Gothic brick church in Pelplin that measures 84 meters long, 29 meters (95 feet) wide, and 63 meters (207 feet) high. The structure features pointed arches and ribbed vaults that run throughout the entire complex.

In 1258, Duke Mszczuj II brought Cistercian monks to nearby Pogodki before relocating them to Pelplin in 1276. The monastery grew over the centuries into a major religious center in the region.

The building has served as the seat of the local bishop since 1824 and draws worshippers from across the surrounding area. The parish community includes more than eight thousand members who attend regular services and religious celebrations.

Access to the cathedral is typically available during daylight hours, and visitors can explore the interior outside of service times. The main entrance leads directly into the central nave, from where the various chapels and altars are easy to reach.

The main altar dates from 1623 and presents an early Baroque multi-tiered structure with reliquary repositories in its lower section. Twenty-four altars are distributed along the pillars between the naves and in the side aisles, most of them made from wood.
