Grodzisko Owidz, Medieval archaeological site in Pomorskie, Poland
Grodzisko Owidz is an archaeological site with a reconstructed wooden fortification on an elevated mound, featuring defensive walls, towers, and replicas of ninth-century Slavic structures. The site also includes a museum housed within the complex that displays finds from excavations.
Excavations revealed that this settlement served as a strategic defensive point for Slavic tribes between 800 and 1000 CE. The fortifications were built and rebuilt several times, pointing to a long history of habitation.
The museum displays pottery, weapons, and household items that show how early medieval Slavs lived and worked. These objects help visitors understand the skills and daily routines of people from that era.
The site is reachable by bus from Starogard Gdanski and offers guided tours in multiple languages from April through October. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes since the grounds are hilly and can become slippery when wet.
The site regularly hosts medieval reenactment events where participants practice archery, make pottery, and prepare traditional Slavic meals using historical methods. These live demonstrations help visitors experience the daily work and crafts of earlier times firsthand.
