Church of Saint Matthew in Starogard Gdański

The Church of Saint Matthew is a brick structure with three naves, a rectangular chancel, and decorative gables featuring double-arch blind windows. The building sits near the Wierzyca river and displays clear Gothic architectural features throughout its form.

Construction of the present building began in 1309 under Teutonic Order rule. Fires in 1461, 1484, and 1655 caused damage that led to repairs and modifications shaping the structure we see today.

The church moved between Catholic and Lutheran use during the Reformation before settling back into Catholic practice permanently. Walking through the interior today, you can sense the layers of religious history that shaped this space and its community.

A wall painting from the mid-15th century depicting Judgment Day survives above the chancel arch. Inside you can also find the Renaissance gravestone of Jerzy Niemojewski, another artistic reminder of the church's rich past.
