Ciechanów is an administrative center in Ciechanów County within Mazowieckie Province. The settlement lies along the Łydynia River and is surrounded by flat farmland used for grain cultivation.
The first written record dates from 1065 during the reign of Bolesław II the Bold. Town rights were granted in the 13th century and the settlement grew into a regional trading center in the Duchy of Mazovia.
The old town displays typical features of Polish provincial towns with low brick residential buildings and cobbled lanes. Locals use the central market square for weekly markets where farmers sell fresh vegetables and regional products.
The Warsaw-Gdańsk railway line connects the town with larger centers to the north and south. The best time to visit is between May and September when days are long and weather remains stable.
The local brewery continues a tradition from the 16th century and uses water from wells beneath the town. Visitors can see the old vaulted cellars where beer barrels were once stored.
