Castle of the Masovian Dukes in Ciechanów

Castle of the Masovian Dukes in Ciechanów, Gothic fortified castle in Ciechanów, Poland.

The Castle of the Masovian Dukes is a medieval brick structure with two circular towers positioned at opposite corners of the complex. Defensive walls surround a rectangular courtyard and reach approximately 10 meters in height.

Construction started in 1420 under Prince Janusz I with master builder Niklos directing the work. The fortress was completed in 1429 and served as a defensive stronghold for the Masovian rulers.

The castle now functions as a museum where visitors encounter objects and displays related to the Masovian rulers who controlled this area. The exhibitions offer insight into how these leaders shaped the region's development and left their mark on local society.

The castle sits on wetland ground secured by wooden stakes driven deep into the soil. Visitors should be aware of the natural waterlogged conditions, especially during rainy periods or spring thaw.

The fortress foundation rests on wooden stakes driven into wetland ground as a building technique. The Łydynia River wraps around three sides of the structure, providing natural water-based defense that was integral to the original design.
