Upper Silesian Metropolitan Union, Local government association in Katowice, Poland.
The Upper Silesian Metropolitan Union is a network of 41 municipalities that coordinate efforts for shared regional goals. The member cities and towns spread across different landscape types, forming a dense pattern of settlements and administrative areas.
The organization was created in 2007 to strengthen cooperation between neighboring communities. In 2017, it was reformed into Metropolis GZM to better support regional development initiatives.
The region brings together communities from Upper Silesia and the Dąbrowa Basin, each maintaining its own local traditions. Visitors can notice these different characters in the neighborhoods and districts of the connected municipalities.
The union serves as a coordination hub for regional projects, so visits require prior arrangement. Getting around the entire region is easiest by using the public transportation that connects the member municipalities.
The voting system balances the interests of large cities and smaller towns through a special rule that prevents any single municipality from dominating. This ensures that smaller communities also have meaningful input in regional decisions.
