Libiąż

Libiąż is a municipality in Lesser Poland Voivodeship located roughly 45 kilometers west of Kraków. The area consists of a central town and two neighboring villages in a region that developed around coal mining.

The settlement was first documented in 1243 when the Griffin family transferred local territories to the Benedictine order. Centuries later, the discovery of coal deposits at the start of the 20th century transformed the region into a mining center.

The place has been shaped by its mining heritage, which deeply influenced how people here lived and saw themselves for many generations. Walking through the town, you can still sense how this industry became part of the local identity and daily rhythm.

The best way to explore the area is on foot or by bicycle, moving through the different parts of the municipality. Visitors should expect to see how the region still reflects its past as a mining center in its layout and appearance.

The Janina Coal Mine, opened around 1900, became the engine of economic growth for this entire region. It shaped the lives of countless families and remains woven into the local story in ways visitors can still observe today.
