Wapienica is a residential district in the southern part of Bielsko-Biała, running along the Wapienica River. The area is made up of a mix of older houses and newer apartment buildings, with green spaces, schools, and local shops spread between them.
The first settlers arrived in the area in the 16th century, and early records listed the place under the German name Lopnitz. As industry grew in the wider region, the district gradually became home to workers and tradespeople.
The name Wapienica comes from the Polish word for lime, a direct reference to the limestone-rich ground beneath the district. Locals still gather around the small shops and community spaces that give the neighborhood its everyday, unhurried character.
Several bus lines run between the district and the city center, with Cieszyńska Street serving as the main road for drivers coming from the center. The neighborhood is easy to explore on foot, as paved paths and pedestrian crossings are found throughout.
The Wapienica River that runs through the district was once used to support local lime extraction, making the waterway part of the area's early economy. Today its banks form a green strip where residents walk and spend time outdoors.
