Braniewo County, Administrative county in Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, Poland.
Braniewo County is an administrative district in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, located in northeastern Poland along the border with Russia's Kaliningrad region. It is made up of several municipalities covering open farmland, forests, and small towns.
The territory was part of the Teutonic Order's lands for centuries, then passed through Prussian rule before becoming part of Poland after World War II. The county's current administrative boundaries were set in 1999 as part of a national reform.
The villages of the region still have old churches and manor houses that reflect the influence of different peoples who lived here over the centuries. Life moves at a rural pace, shaped by farming seasons and local gatherings rather than urban routines.
A car is the most practical way to move around, as public transport links between smaller villages are limited. Larger towns like Braniewo offer the most services and work well as a base for getting around the area.
The county shares a direct land border with Russia's Kaliningrad region, which is a part of Russia cut off from the rest of the country. This makes the area one of the few places in Poland where you can stand within a short drive of Russian territory without crossing any other country.
