Warsaw Babice Airfield, Recreational Aerodrome
Warsaw Babice Airfield is an aerodrome located on the outskirts of Warsaw that has served aviation activities since the early 20th century. It features a concrete runway approximately 1000 yards (900 meters) long and a smaller grass runway, primarily used for training flights and smaller aircraft operations.
The airfield originated as the site of the Research Institute of Aviation Technology and later became part of the Technical Institute of Aviation. During wartime it functioned as a military training base, and after the war it transitioned to civilian flights and pilot training programs.
The airfield serves as a gathering place for aviation enthusiasts who share a common passion. Volunteers and dedicated staff preserve this piece of Poland's flight history while maintaining a community where pilots and flying clubs continue to practice their craft.
The airfield is conveniently located near Warsaw's city center and can be reached by car, tram, or bike from various parts of the city. It is recommended to withdraw Polish zloty in advance and review the Aeronautical Information Publication before arrival, as the traffic pattern differs from standard procedures.
The airfield hosted Michael Jackson's concert in 1996 with thousands of fans attending an unexpected musical event at the runway. Today visitors can spot a Yak-40 aircraft used by the Military University of Technology for training, a historic plane that still operates at the field.
