Biskupin, Żnin County

Biskupin is an archaeological site near a lake containing the remains of an ancient settlement. The grounds display wooden house foundations arranged in parallel rows and connected by pathways.

The site was a fortified village founded around the 8th century BC and inhabited for an extended period. It disappeared after water levels rose, burying the structures beneath silt.

The settlement shows how people organized themselves and built their homes thousands of years ago. The wooden structures clustered together give a sense of how daily life was shared in this close-knit community.

The site can be explored on foot and is easily accessible. Good footwear is advisable as the ground can be uneven and muddy depending on the season.

The residents built a wooden breakwater system on the lake to shield the village from flooding and attacks. This construction demonstrates early engineering skill and the practical thinking of its inhabitants.
