Gościkowo

Gościkowo is a village in Gmina Świebodzin situated along the Paklica River within a glacial depression surrounded by the natural features of the Lubusz Lake District. The settlement is centered around the former Cistercian monastery complex, which remains the most prominent structure in the landscape.

In 1230, Mikołaj Bronisz founded a Cistercian monastery that received the Latin name Paradius Matris Dei, also known as Paradyż. This establishment marked the beginning of the settlement as an important religious center in a border region.

The former monastery now operates as a theological seminary, maintaining its role as a place of religious learning and spiritual life. This ongoing function shapes how the village is perceived and used by those who pass through it.

The village has a primary school located in a former German palace that serves the local population of around 400 residents. The settlement is rural and small, so walking or driving are the best ways to explore the area and visit the monastery complex.

By the 13th century, the monastery controlled over 16,000 hectares of land, making it one of the largest landholders in the area. This vast estate allowed it to become a powerful religious and economic center that influenced the entire region.
