Hel Lighthouse, Lighthouse in Hel, Poland
Hel Lighthouse is an octagonal brick tower standing at the tip of the Hel Peninsula overlooking the entrance to Gdansk Bay. The structure measures roughly 41 meters tall and features a red lantern room with an observation gallery at the top.
The original lighthouse was destroyed during World War II, and the current structure was rebuilt in 1942 following German designs. Local residents led the reconstruction effort at this critical navigation point.
The lighthouse marks the entry point where ships turn right to access the ports of Gdansk Bay, continuing a maritime tradition that dates back to medieval times.
You can climb to the observation deck from May through September, reaching a height of about 39 meters. The hours extend during peak summer months, typically opening from morning until evening.
The lighting system uses an automated backup bulb that swivels into place when the main 1000-watt lamp fails. This redundancy ensures ships entering Gdansk Bay always have reliable guidance from this crucial navigation point.
