Matłak, Village in Gmina Bakałarzewo, Poland
Matłak is a village in northeastern Poland, part of Gmina Bakałarzewo in Suwałki County. It sits in the Podlaskie Voivodeship, surrounded by fields, small forests, and lakes not far from the Lithuanian border.
The area around Matłak was settled very early, with archaeological finds pointing to human activity thousands of years ago. Over time, ownership and administrative borders changed hands, and the village suffered heavily during the Second World War, after which much of it had to be rebuilt.
The village is most easily reached by car, as public transport options in this rural area are very limited. Those who want to explore the surrounding lakes and forests should allow plenty of time and wear sturdy footwear.
Local accounts say that channels between nearby lakes were once deliberately redirected to give an advantage to a mill in the village. These works permanently changed the course of the Rospuda River.
