Nature reserve Segiet, Nature reserve in Bobrowniki near Bytom, Poland
Nature reserve Segiet is a forest complex located between Bytom and Tarnowskie Góry, containing old mining shafts that penetrate underground. Beech and other trees form a dense canopy across the protected area.
The area was historically a center for lead and silver extraction until mining operations ceased and the land was placed under protection. Today the underground installations are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Mining Landscape of Silver Mountain.
The place blends forest preservation with mining heritage, showing how nature and historical industrial structures coexist within the same space. Visitors can see how vegetation has gradually reclaimed the old mining sites.
Access is best via the narrow-gauge railway station at Bytom-Sucha Góra, from where a blue-marked trail leads to the reserve. The area can be explored on foot and connects to other regional attractions.
The underground tunnels serve as a winter shelter for the largest bat colony in the region. Many species rely on the stable and humid conditions found in the old mining shafts.
