Śląski Teatr Tańca, Dance theatre in Bytom, Poland.
Śląski Teatr Tańca is a dance theatre located in a central building at Zeromskiego 27 in Bytom that offers performances throughout the year. The venue presents both classical choreography and contemporary experimental work, housing spaces designed for both productions and artistic training.
The theatre was founded in 1991 by dancer and choreographer Jacek Luminski and quickly developed into an important venue for contemporary dance. Operations continued for roughly two decades before local authorities made the decision to close the institution in 2013.
The venue serves as a gathering place for people interested in contemporary movement and pushes boundaries in how dance is presented on stage. It has become a space where both local and visiting artists share their work with audiences who engage with modern interpretations of the art form.
The building underwent major reconstruction work with key phases completed in 1974 and 2009, improving both the performance spaces and training facilities. Visitors should check in advance what events are scheduled, as the programme changes seasonally.
The venue pioneered dance education by establishing the first higher education programme focused specifically on dance theatre performance arts. This programme shaped a generation of artists in the region and helped establish dance as a serious academic discipline.
