Kochłowice, Medieval motte-and-bailey castle in Kochłowice, Poland.
Kochłowice is a medieval motte-and-bailey fortification located in the village of Kochłowice in Poland. The mound has an irregular oval shape with visible rampart remains and sits between two waterways that naturally enhanced its defensive position.
This fortification originated in the late medieval period and was first documented in 1287 as an active castle. It served as a seat for local castellans and continued to function defensively until the 15th century.
The name Kochłowice comes from Slavic roots and refers to the settlement that once occupied this location. Visitors can walk around the mound today and see how the natural shape still reflects the way people organized their defenses centuries ago.
The site is easily reached on foot and sits right beside a street for convenient access. Wear sturdy shoes as the terrain is uneven and can be muddy or slippery depending on the season.
This site is the only surviving conical mound fortification in the region. Old maps reveal it once had two distinct mounds arranged in a figure-8 pattern before one gradually disappeared.
