Duke Boleslaw V the Chaste established the church in the early 13th century, and it underwent multiple reconstructions after fires in the 15th, 16th, 17th, and 19th centuries.
The church maintained its position as the bishop's church during World War II when Wawel Cathedral closed, serving the religious needs of the local population.

The church contains a certified replica of the Shroud of Turin, measuring 4.36 by 1.10 meters, which Pope John Paul II consecrated in 2003.
