Art Book Museum

The Art Book Museum is an art collection in Łódź focused on artistic publications, experimental typography, and rare printed materials housed within a historic building downtown. Its collection emphasizes works that push the boundaries of print design and bookmaking.

The museum was established in 1993 and grew from a significant donation of books on printing and bookmaking contributed by Professor Alfred Świerk. This gift included over 1200 German and Polish titles that form the foundation of the collection today.

The museum connects books with visual art through exhibitions of artist-made publications and limited editions that emphasize printing and binding techniques. Visitors witness how writers and artists brought their work to life through unconventional production methods.

The basement contains a working typecasting workshop with 19th-century machines where visitors can observe traditional printing methods during scheduled demonstrations. Check ahead for demonstration times to see these machines in operation.

The museum preserves functional historical printing equipment including Soviet versions of Linotype machines and multiple composition casters for metal type production. This rare collection of working machines allows visitors to experience how printing technology actually operated.
