Castle joannitów Skarszewach

Castle Joannitów in Skarszewy is a brick structure built on a steep headland surrounded by the Wietcisa River on three sides. The complex includes residential buildings and utility structures arranged compactly around a central courtyard.

The castle was built in 1334 by the Knights of St. John, later passing to the Teutonic Order before becoming Polish territory in 1466. These transfers reflected the shifting political control of the region over several centuries.

The castle now serves as a community hub with spaces dedicated to local exhibitions and cultural events. This role has transformed it into an active gathering place for regional artistic and social activities.

The castle is accessible by regional roads from Skarszewy and sits in hilly terrain with good walking routes along the river. Spring through autumn offers the best visiting conditions when weather is mild and surroundings are green.

Restoration work in the 1980s uncovered original brick walls bearing traces of earlier windows and architectural changes from different periods. These layers in the masonry tell the story of the building's multiple transformations across generations.
