Krąg Castle

Krąg Castle is a water castle built in Renaissance style on oak piles near a circular lake, featuring four towers and multiple wings arranged in a reversed E-shaped layout. The structure now operates as a hotel where visitors can stay and explore the grounds.

The castle was founded in 1458 by Anton von dem Borne and came to the Podewils family in 1480 through an act of loyalty, beginning their centuries-long stewardship of the estate. This transfer marked the start of a new era for the fortress as a major noble residence.

The chapel inside houses sarcophagi of the Podewils family, showing how this noble line expressed their wealth and connection to the land through religious structures. The architecture follows Pomeranian traditions, blending Renaissance and Baroque styles in a way typical of the region.

The location sits about 34 kilometers east of Koszalin and is easily reached by car, with the surrounding lake landscape making the drive pleasant. The hotel offers both overnight stays and day visits, giving guests flexibility in deciding how long to explore the grounds.

The structure rests on an oak pile foundation system similar to Venetian building methods, showing how medieval builders solved challenges posed by difficult terrain. This engineering solution is a quiet testament to technical skill that visitors often overlook.
