Bishop castle in Prabuty

Bishop Castle in Prabuty is a medieval fortification whose stone remains stand between two lakes in the town. The ruins display Gothic features, with preserved cellars and foundation structures that reveal how the original building was laid out.

Construction of the fortification began between 1276 and 1277 under Bishop Albert, who intended it as a residence for Pomesanian bishops. It served this purpose until 1525, when its role as a bishops' residence came to an end.

The castle served as a gathering place for scholars and poets in the early 16th century, who came to exchange ideas and work. This role made it an important center for intellectual life and literature in the region.

You can walk through the Gothic vaults in the cellars and view a scale model showing how the medieval structure fit into the town's layout. This helps you picture what the original castle looked like and understand its original proportions.

The original design was quadrangular with multiple wings and towers, with the main house positioned on the slope facing the lake. This thoughtful layout gave residents direct access to the water and views of the surrounding landscape.
