Reservoir Srebrzysko, reservoir in Gdańsk, Poland
Reservoir Srebrzysko is a water storage basin in the Wrzeszcz Górny district of Gdańsk, located in a valley near the Strzyża stream. After its reconstruction in 2010-2011, it now covers approximately 3.6 hectares with reinforced dams and drainage systems designed to control flooding and manage water flow through the area.
The reservoir was first built in the 1960s as a dry basin on the site of an old mill pond to manage rainwater runoff. It was upgraded in the early 1990s to become a flow-through basin with a capacity of about 30,000 cubic meters. After a severe flood event in July 2001, it was reconstructed to hold 64,500 cubic meters with improved spillway systems.
The name Srebrzysko was given in 1945, replacing an older German name Silberhammer meaning silver hammer. The area was historically a center for metalworking and milling, where craftspeople and workers left their mark on the local community.
The reservoir can be accessed from public walking paths built during the recent renovation, making it easy to explore on foot from nearby streets. The area is managed by Gdańskie Wody and offers benches and green spaces for resting, with fishing opportunities available for those interested in angling.
In July 2001 the reservoir overflowed during heavy rainfall, turning nearby Słowackiego street into a rushing stream that caught residents by surprise. This dramatic event prompted city authorities to double its capacity and invest in upgraded drainage systems to prevent such incidents in the future.
