Nature reserve Wąwóz Huzarów

This nature reserve is a small forest set in a deep gorge, located within a larger landscape park near Gdańsk. The site features steep wooded slopes with a dense understory of vegetation filling the ravine.

The reserve received formal protection in 2005 when authorities recognized its importance for preserving rare plant species in the Pomeranian landscape. This designation safeguarded the gorge from threats to its ecosystem.

This place shelters unusual mountain plants that normally grow far from the coast, creating a pocket of rare forest flora in an urban area. The deep gorge provides protection for species that would otherwise struggle in lowland surroundings.

Entry is via a marked hiking trail that departs from a residential area on the east side. The path crosses uneven ground, so sturdy footwear is useful and the route is easiest during dry weather.

Two plant species here are partially protected and normally found in mountain regions far to the south. Their presence in this lowland gorge mirrors how the cool microclimate mimics conditions of higher terrain.
