Świnoujście Tunnel, Road tunnel in Świnoujście, Poland
The Świnoujście Tunnel is an underground passage that runs beneath the Świna Channel, linking the islands of Uznam and Wolin. The passage descends roughly 38 meters below sea level and stretches for approximately 1.4 kilometers.
The project broke ground in September 2018 and represented a major infrastructure undertaking for the region. Its completion marked the end of the traditional ferry link that had served as the sole connection between the islands for decades.
The tunnel created the first permanent link between the islands, replacing the ferry service that had shaped daily life in the town for generations. Residents and travelers had relied on that crossing for so long that it became part of the town's identity.
The drive through takes roughly three minutes and provides a smooth, level surface throughout. Visitors should expect steady traffic flow year-round and a relatively swift passage.
The tunnel is Poland's longest underwater road tunnel and operates at considerable depth below the seafloor. This engineering achievement often goes unnoticed by travelers compared to the practical time savings it provides.
