Grudziądzka Gate in Chełmno, City gate and fortified tower in Chełmno, Poland
The Grudziądzka Gate in Chełmno is a Brick Gothic city gate and fortified tower built in the late 13th century, standing at the junction of Grudziądzka and Dworcowa streets. A small Renaissance chapel, added in 1694, is visibly attached to the structure on the outside.
The gate was built in the late 13th century as one of seven main entrances through the medieval walls of Chełmno. Over the centuries it served several purposes, including as a prison, before the chapel added in 1694 helped spare it from the demolitions that removed most of the other city gates in the 19th century.
The gate sits at a clearly visible corner where Grudziądzka and Dworcowa streets meet, making it easy to find on foot. The attached chapel is open to visitors and worth a brief stop.
The chapel was deliberately built onto the gate to protect it from demolition, a strategy that worked when the other city gates were torn down in the 19th century. On the east side of the wall, a small niche holds a replica of a Pieta from the 17th or 18th century that many visitors walk past without noticing.
