Church of SS. Peter and Paul in Chełmno

The Church of Saints Peter and Paul is a brick Gothic church located in the northeastern part of medieval Chelmno. The interior features a basilica layout with a chancel, nave, and six supporting pillars creating its structural framework.

Dominican monks arrived in the 1230s and first settled in Starogrod before moving to the newly founded town of Chelmno. They established this church as their community center in the developing urban settlement.

Medieval frescoes depicting biblical scenes adorn the interior walls, discovered during restoration work in 1969 and reflecting the artistic expressions of the faithful. These paintings show how worshippers connected religious stories to their daily spiritual lives.

The church is positioned in the northeastern section of medieval Chelmno and is accessible through a main entrance with a segmental arch design. Its location within the old town makes it easy to include in a walking tour of the historic area.

The Dominican leadership here hosted provincial meetings of their order in 1370 and 1450, serving as an important gathering place for religious administration. These events indicate the church held authority and influence beyond its immediate local community.
