Mokrsko Górne Castle, Medieval castle ruins in Mokrsko Górne, Poland
Mokrsko Górne Castle is a medieval fortification built on a rectangular plan measuring roughly 25 by 45 meters using fieldstone and located in marshy terrain near the Nida River. The eastern wall of the residential building and the northeastern corner of the defensive structure with two basement chambers remain visible today.
Construction of the fortress began in the late 1300s under the initiative of Bishop Florian of Krakow or his brother Klemens, castellan of Radom. This stronghold was part of the network of castles built by these influential families to control their territories.
The ruins reveal how medieval nobles in this region built their strongholds and organized their living spaces. The defensive walls with buttresses and vaulted basement rooms show both the security concerns and domestic comfort that the inhabitants valued.
The ruins are easily accessible on foot and can be examined from the outside, with the basic structures clearly visible. The marshy surroundings can be wet, especially after rainfall, so proper footwear is advisable.
A roughly 100-meter causeway linked the outer bailey to the main castle, which stood on a moated elevation for maximum defense. This elaborate arrangement made direct access difficult and forced any attackers to navigate a challenging approach.
