Description

The Syrenka Monument is 4.5 m tall and made of bronze and sandstone materials. The statue depicts the Warsaw Mermaid standing along the riverside promenade near the Vistula River and the Świętokrzyski Bridge.

History

The monument was created in 1939 by sculptor Ludwika Nitschowa, using the young poet and ethnography student Krystyna Krahelska as the model. This creation during the pre-war period became symbolically important for the city's identity.

Culture

The figure carries a shield and sword, representing Warsaw's protective symbol deeply rooted in the city's story. This mermaid image has become so linked to the city's identity that people recognize it instantly as Warsaw's emblem.

The monument is located near the Świętokrzyski Bridge complex and is easily reached by public transportation. You can walk around it comfortably and the riverside promenade offers many paths for exploring the area on foot.
